The first production Discovery Sport has finally rolled off Land Rover’s production line in Halewood, UK and is on its way to Virgin Galactic’s headquarters to be used by the team as they continue to prepare for the launch of the world’s first commercial spaceline.
Land Rover has invested over $250 million in its Halewood plant, added 250 new jobs and awarded some $4.5 billion in contracts to 55 suppliers. Dubbed as “the world’s most versatile and capable compact SUV,” the seven-seat Discovery Sport replaces the Land Rover LR2 and is the first of the new Discovery family that is set to open the door to a whole new level of capability and refinement.
The Discovery Sport is scheduled to make its U.S. debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month before it joins Land Rover Austin’s lineup. This launch marks another significant milestone in the product offensive for Jaguar Land Rover, which will see the company deliver 50 significant product actions over the next five years.
The 2015 Discovery Sport will deliver a highly refined combination of performance, safety and efficiency thanks to a body shell of high-strength steel and lightweight aluminum, a 240 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine linked to a smooth shifting nine-speed automatic transmission, as well as standard all-wheel drive.
If you would like to be one of the first in Austin to take this sensational SUV for a test climb, then we encourage you to call our dealership today and we will notify you as soon as the first shipment arrives.
Land Rover Austin along with Jaguar Land Rover is proud to announce that the new Ingenium 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine family will begin production in early 2015, and promises to deliver class-leading CO2 emissions, power, torque as well as refinement.
These highly innovative engines will showcase unmatched technology, with low-friction, high performance petrol and diesel motors that have been designed to meet growing customer demand for lower fuel consumption and cost of ownership without comprising the experience behind the wheel.
All Ingenium engines will feature turbochargers, high-pressure direct fuel injection, variable valve timing and engine stop-start, and will provide ample levels of power while at the same time reducing emissions.
The Land Rover powertrain engineers at the Whitley and Gaydon development facilities have based Ingenium’s foundation on extremely strong and compact aluminium blocks for both the diesel and petrol versions. These lightweight blocks share the same bore, stroke, cylinder spacing and 500cc cylinder capacity, which helps give Ingenium the configurability and flexibility around which smaller or larger engines can quickly and efficiently be developed to meet future regulatory and competitive requirements.
Ron Lee, Jaguar Land Rover Director of Powertrain Engineering, stated, “Ingenium fulfils our commitment to offer our global customers some of the most advanced powertrains available in some of the lightest vehicles in the premium SUV and performance car segments. Being configurable and flexible are the two key strands of Ingenium’s DNA because we have future-proofed our new engines from the outset. Ingenium will be able to accept new advances in fuel, turbocharging, emissions, performance and electrification technologies when they are ready and accessible to be deployed.”
