Land Rover BAR Uses Machine Learning

Led by Sir Ben Ainslie, the Land Rover Ben Ainslie Racing, or Land Rover BAR, sailing team is made up of some of the best British and International sailors, designers, builders, and racing support. Land Rover BAR was established in 2014.

Using machine learning to analyze the performance of Land Rover vehicles, Mauricio Munoz, a Jaguar Land Rover Performance Engineer, uses this data and applies it to the systems that manage the electronics and hydraulic systems on the boat the Land Rover BAR team uses.

“Essentially, what we are trying to do is get a better insight of how or why the boat is performing in the way that it is performing and try to find ways to better increase its performance,” Munoz explains, “Basically, what I’m looking for are patterns, combinations of behaviors that the boat has that could potentially give us a clue as to why the boat goes faster in certain conditions. “

“We’re applying machine learning and artificial intelligence, and they haven’t really been applied to this sort of data before. Machine learning at BAR, that’s the cavalry of performance analysis. With machine learning, what you can do is, to save time, instead of having to go out on the water and changing one thing, we can virtually change many things at once. It is absolutely fantastic.”

Implementing this data and improving performance will, hopefully, allow Land Rover BAR to bring home a victory at the America’s Cup.

“It would be really really rewarding if we win the cup now and if we could essentially trace that back to some of the analysis that we did. It is just as much as having a really well trained sailing team as it is to have a boat that’s easy to sail. When you connect the two, I think that’s what is really going to bring it home.”

Land Rover – SVO Premium Paint Palette

Land Rover has built a brand new facility that will deliver cars with almost limitless paint options. You will be able to select any color and any finish.

This facility was built based on the principals of technology, craft, and environment. By using state of the art equipment, expert technicians, and a sustainable environment, vehicles are treated with the utmost care and detail.

By using the Special Vehicle Operations Premium Paint Palette, customers are offered greater individuality and appearance. The SVO state of the art paint facility has almost infinite ability to match any color. Their state of the art mixing technology allows customers to request any hue. They are only limited by their imagination.

At the Special Vehicle Operations paint facility, Land Rover is always striving to offer more advanced paint technologies. This is implemented in many ways, including duo tone finishes and ChromaFlair.

Duo tone adds to the individuality and customization of the vehicle. Customers can choose complementing colors to really refine and personalize.

The ChromaFlair finish adds to the customers’ personal tastes. This finish includes pigments that exhibit a wide range of hue. This gives vibrant colors a color change when you look at it from different angles and in different levels of light.

The vehicle starts in the top notch body shop where it is cleaned thoroughly to pave the way for a perfect paint application. Once the vehicle is cleaned, it is hand sprayed by a master painter to guarantee optimum coverage. Then two cutting edge robots apply a perfect finish across the entire vehicle. This is done with absolute precision, measured down to the last micron.

The vehicle is then dried in the over and then cooled to the correct temperature to make sure the protective top coat will adhere perfectly. Once the clear protective top coat has been applied it is cured in the main oven. Finally, the vehicle enters the audit facility where it is thoroughly checked for an outstanding paint finish and uniformity.

New Intelligent Seat Fold Technology

The All-New Land Rover Discovery has been revealed, and it will include Intelligent Seat Fold technology. In just 14 seconds, this brand new technology will allow the owner to remotely adjust the seats from anywhere in the world with the use of a smartphone. This eliminates the need to manually configure them.

In conjunction with the British Royal Navy Parachute Display Team, Bear Grylls and six members of the British Royal Navy Parachute Team freefell from 13,000 feet at 125 mph to test it out. While freefalling, Grylls used his smartphone to configure the seven seats of a Land Rover Discovery.

“I think the heart of Land Rover is all about pioneering adventure,” Grylls says, “you know having that spirit of discovery and going for things.”

Land Rover’s Intelligent Seat Fold technology will allow the owner to completely recline or fold down all five seats in the rear of the Discovery. This new feature will allow owners to configure the seats in their vehicle while doing everyday things. Such as waiting in line at the grocery store, or enjoying a child’s sporting event.

“I think it’s all about doing stuff that is user friendly. The thing is the way to test user friendly is to do it in difficult environments. So that way we say, let’s try to configure a car in freefall. That, for us, is definitely sort of in the right space because you’ve got to be able to concentrate on the important stuff, which is pulling the parachute. This [Intelligent Seat Fold technology] needs to be easy to be intuitive and easy to do. If it’s complicated, then you’re in trouble.”

“The successful part is we did manage to configure this,” Grylls concludes. “The seats did flip down, we opened it up, done, ready to go, ditch the parachutes, in and out of there. So, mission complete.”

In-Car Spotify App for Land Rover

Land Rover and the world’s largest streaming service, Spotify, have joined forces to create a unique in-car app! A year was spent working to create this new technology and make it as user friendly as possible.

The In-Car Spotify App will be able to be personalized based on user’s preferences really revolutionizing the way you listen to music while you drive! The new app’s interface is very similar to the Spotify app on users’ smartphones. This allows familiarity for the user which will eliminate distractions while driving. Users will also have the ability to swipe horizontally to look through menus, also eliminating distractions.

Similar to Spotify on a user’s smartphone or computer, the in-car app will have the ability to recognize the user’s listening habits so music is better catered to each individual. Personalized playlists with recommended music can be created for each individual. This saves the user time by eliminating the need to scroll through music.

“Spotify has more than 100 million subscribers, a portion of whom drive Land Rovers, so we recognized that Spotify was the top of our customers’ apps wish list. The Spotify design team worked closely with us to create the best in-vehicle experience,” says Peter Virk, Director of Connected Technologies and Apps at Jaguar Land Rover.

Elliot Gleave, a singer better known by his stage name, Example, and Ricky Wilson, from the Indie Rock band Kaiser Chiefs, tested the new In-Car Spotify App before it was released and shared a variety of songs they enjoy listening while driving.

While speaking on the phone, they shared what was on their playlists and what their favorite songs to listen to while driving are. Songs from Greenday and Morrissey are included. Ricky Wilson and Elliot Gleave’s playlists are available for everyone to listen to on Spotify via the official Kaiser Chiefs and Example profiles.
